Weaving the Vessel

2024, socially engaged art project and performance event

Weaving the Vessel’ is an ecologically-centred, seasonal project exploring themes and practices related to weaving, foraging and herbs.

The project was set under a majestic Holm Oak tree in Lettsom community gardens in Camberwell, working in partnership with Southwark Day Centre for Asylum seekers. During the  weekly gatherings through the seasons, we introduced and exchanged methods of plant connection, craft-making, and sharing narratives, as artistic practices and therapeutic tools, to nurture self-care, kinship, and collective healing.

As a central part of the process, participants collectively wove vessels, as both physical containers for herbs gathered on foraging walks. and as holders of stories, narratives, exchanges, and shared experiences.

The physical and conceptual vessel was explored and illuminated through performance methods, sound, guided visualisation, meditation walks, drawing and singing, inspired by own own embodied practices, herbal and weaving training, and methods inspired by the field of eco-psychology, aiming to expand our emotional and embodied connections to nature as a form of healing.

This project was presented by Stone Tellers, a new collective vision by artists Rosalind Fowler and Claudia da Palma Romao (Primal Waters), working together for this project with other invited collaborators - weaver Liz Forrester, forager/artist Bryony James and sound therapist/artist Nicole Bettencourt Coelho (NMBC).
